What was it in the end that destroyed the civilization of the grasslands? The colonial expansion of industrial civilization or a politically-driven extinction under totalitarianism? Was it a natural depletion of material resources or a washing away over time in some metaphysical sense? Aluss has no intention of providing answers to these questions in his photographic works, but he does raise acute questions and provide pointers, a keener and more anxious service than the giving of answers.
